Flying from Los Angeles to Las Vegas is quick, but you’d miss out on one of America’s most iconic drives. A road trip between these two cities isn’t just about getting from A to B — it’s about soaking up desert landscapes, quirky roadside attractions, and world-famous landmarks. Here’s how to make the most of the journey.

How Long Does the Drive Take?

If you were to drive straight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, it would take about 4–5 hours (around 435km). But this trip is much better when you take your time and make a few well-chosen stops. Plan for at least a full day if you want to enjoy the key attractions — or even two days if you’d like a more relaxed pace.

Must-See Stops Along the Way

1. Calico Ghost Town

📍 Yermo, California
Once a bustling silver mining town in the late 1800s, Calico is now a well-preserved ghost town with wooden boardwalks, old saloons, and mine tours. It’s a fun, family-friendly stop and a great introduction to the Old West.
💡 Tip: Allow about 1–2 hours to explore.

2. Death Valley National Park (Detour Required)

📍 California/Nevada border
If you’ve got the time, Death Valley is one of the most otherworldly landscapes on Earth — vast salt flats, sand dunes, and colourful canyons. Visit Badwater Basin (the lowest point in North America) and Zabriskie Point for breathtaking views.
💡 Tip: Best visited in the cooler months (October–April). In summer, temperatures can exceed 45°C.

3. Seven Magic Mountains

📍 Just outside Las Vegas
A modern art installation of seven towering stacks of brightly coloured boulders. It’s free to visit and makes for some fantastic Instagram shots.

4. Hoover Dam (Optional Side Trip)

📍 Nevada/Arizona border
If you have extra time before or after your Vegas stay, the Hoover Dam is a short detour from the city. This engineering marvel is especially impressive in person, and you can take guided tours inside the dam itself.

5. The Best Mexican Restaurant Stop – La Casita

📍 Chandler, Arizona – Actually, if you want something directly en route, the standout is La Casita Mexican Restaurant in Barstow, CA.
Expect authentic tacos, enchiladas, and fresh guacamole served in generous portions. It’s been a local favourite for decades — and the perfect fuel before hitting the desert highway.
💡 Recommended dish: The carne asada tacos with fresh salsa.

Road Trip Essentials

  • Car hire: Book in advance from LAX or downtown LA. Choose a comfortable car — it’s a long drive through desert landscapes.
  • Fuel: Fill up before you leave Los Angeles; petrol stations can be sparse in certain stretches.
  • Navigation: Google Maps and Waze works fine, but you’ll need a steady data connection such as our USA eSIM/SIM that uses the T-Mobile network.
  • Music & snacks: It’s a road trip — a good playlist is essential.
